Guest Room Hospitality 101: 13 Must Haves for Every Guest Room

This 1934 Craftsman Bungalow was designed to entertain. Between the unique, circular floor plan, the vast backyard, and a few smart renovation decisions, this beautiful older home feels much more open than expected.

Hosting visitors is both an honor and gift this gal loves to take advantage of. Over the years, I’ve learned from my travels and dearest friends the in’s and out’s of what it takes to care for good company in the most genuine and hospitable way.

An avid thrifter, many of the items in this particularly purple-y guest room were sought secondhand. Find out which pieces below. You may be surprised what you can find, too.

1. Luggage Rack

Have a designated spot for your guests to drop their weekender bag or suitcase. The vintage lucite luggage rack was thrifted online. You can quickly find similar ones on auction websites or brand new.

2. Mini Bar

Nothing says “I love you” to your visitors like having a top-shelf nightcap available at their fingertips. On a silver platter, of course. Aside from Oban, the entire mini bar setup is secondhand. Go on a scavenger hunt at your local thrift shops and one’s bound to turn up.

3. WiFi Information

No matter where I live, my cell service never seems to like operating optimally. Get your guests browsing with ease with a WiFi printable customized with your home’s information. Interested in my homemade printable? Shoot me an email and I’ll share!

4. Place to Unpack

I HAVE to unpack the moment I arrive at a destination. My husband makes sport of this trait all the time. What can I say, this girl likes to feel settled. Have a place for your guests to unpack—whether it’s a dresser, nightstand or hooks to hang all the garb.

A lovely, thrifty tale: the blonde mid century modern dresser was one of the first big furnishings the original owner procured after moving into the home that started their budding family in the early 1960s. I purchased it from one of the daughters and it made my heart swell to have it.

Since hubby snagged the dresser, I made room for guests with a storage-friendly velvet platform bed (yep, there’s four drawers under there!) as well as mounting brass double-hooks into the walls for coats, purses and thangs.

5. Towels + Toiletries

You know those cute mini bottles you’ll come across whilst traveling? Start stockpiling on your next adventure! They make for fabulous guest toiletries. Lotion, shampoo, conditioner complete with fresh towels seals the deal.

6. Lounge Chair

Have a place for your guest to pop a squat and get ready, read a book, pet a cat (maybe a plant), whatever they heck they wanna do. This botanical swivel rocker is from a glorious set of two, and one of my most prized thrifts, and not so easy to replicate. Godspeed on the hunt for one.

7. Full-Length Mirror

Girl’s gotta get ready, amirite? Let ‘em go wild in their own private space to make it feel like a home away from home. This one’s thrifted with similar options abounding.

8. Reading Material + Mini Book Flashlight!

Give your guests the option to get lost in books that invoke inspiration and creativity. Magazines and coffee table books about artists and world travels should do.

9. Jewelry Tray

When I travel, if there’s one thing I always over-pack it’s accessories. Have a pretty little tray for all these pretty little things.

10. Cozy Blankets

My husband and I sleep like two boiling hot radiators, but hey, not everybody is so lucky. 😂 Have a variety of cozy throws available to give your guests options. This limited edition throw is no longer available, but you can easily search for orange tassel throw alternates online.

11. Mood Lighting

Good gawd, I love mood lighting. In fact, I believe the more light sources, the better. Find fixtures that’ll cover all different types—low light and bright (yet not overbearing). A steady mixture of table/floor lamps, (plug-in) wall sconces, a chandelier and/or pendant will light it up just right.

Normally, I go for a frosted globe chandelier. With the ceiling painted to match the walls, the clear balls are killin’ it. Not to mention, a $150 thrift score. Cha-ching.

12. Eye Candy

A collector’s got a lot of stories to tell. Share your storied collections with guests by layering delicious eye candy throughout the space. That could be plants, funky art, wallpaper, an unexpected paint color. This will give your guest room a naturally luxe and lived-in feel.

13. Bluetooth Speaker

Fact: if you stay here, there will be at least one late-night dance party. Let your guests be ready to have their own.
