DIY Paper Pots for Garden Seedlings

Gardening season is underway, which means it’s time to get our seeds in a row and sowed! 🌿 Starting from seed not only saves shekels, you’ll be able to get a major head start on the growing season. How shall we do it? In compostable DIY paper pots, that’s how. Lawd knows we’ve got plenty of time to make them in our cocoons.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Newspaper, brown paper, circulars, just some dang paper
Plate of water
Empty can
Potting soil
Seeds

INSTRUCTIONS

Cut your paper into long slivers, approximately 15” to 17” long and 2” to 3” tall. Grab the empty can and wrap the first sheet under the can with the ends facing upward.

Wrap the second sheet around the can and fold the tops of the first sheet over the second. Wrap a third sheet around the can and slide into the folded pieces.

Dip the fourth sheet in water, wrap from the bottom up, remove the can, and fold the ends into the paper pot. Boom, that’s it.

Fill the paper pot with potting soil, dip a finger to make a hole, pop in a seed, store in a tray and leave in a sunny spot or under a grow light.

Plant your DIY paper pots in the ground per the seed packet recommendations, or have a look at the Farmer’s Almanac for sage advice on when it’s optimal to plant outdoors in your area. In Connecticut, we typically plant outside soon after Mother’s Day.
