Today, I’m sharing one of my most creative, summer-licious concoctions: this Sleek, Eclectic and Bohemian Outdoor Patio.

THE CONCEPTS

This outdoor patio has great bones: stucco and Spanish-style roof, a porcelain paver patio perfect for seating flanked with young shrubs; turf for greenery balancing the paver patio; and plentiful shade throughout the day ideal for a Southern California backyard.
Nevertheless, my nature-loving client felt “cemented-in” by the privacy wall; longed for a former sunny apartment; and the turf was just that, turf.
The goal was to transform this Mission-style space to feel magical, lived-in and cozy—a place for kids to play and friends and family to gather, doubling as a yogi’s meditative retreat replete with an herb garden and greenery.

THE FLOOR PLAN
A centralized seating area full of vibrant color and patterns helps draw attention away from the privacy walls. Adding in large live plants adds texture and a boost to the young, budding shrubs.
Over by the turf, an imposing wooden hammock stand produces visual interest, an intentional distraction from the faux grass.
An herb garden bed accomplishes two objectives: a farm-to-table experience to share with their child while also concealing unsightly pipes and avoiding childhood injuries.
When desired, an extra large yoga mat rolls out for mediation or practice, covering up a good portion of the turf. A petite water feature produces an added layer of zen.
String lights seal the deal, strung in a zigzag pattern from the soffits to inconspicuous metal poles.
