One Room Challenge – Green Kitchen Glamazon – The Reveal

Omigosh, omigossshh, OMIGOSH!!!! ARE YOU READY FOR THIS? ‘Cause I am. It’s week six of the One Room Challenge, my best fronds. And we all know what that means, right?! IT’S REVEAL DAY, BABAY!!!! She’s done. D-U-N, done. Honestly, I wasn’t sure this day would ever come. 😆 Three months deep in dusty home reno makes ya dizzy after a while.

If you’re new here, make sure to have a look at the entire renovation process from Week One, Week Two, Week Three, Week Four and Week Five!

This green kitchen glamazon in my 1934 Craftsman Bungalow was a labor of love and turned out better than I could have ever dreamed. It was hard work, mentally (and physically) exhausting and I learned a whole heck of a lot when it comes to major home renovation. Seeing the magic come alive in-person instantly made every single tireless effort worth it. I’m ready to reap the rewards. In other words, cooking for da-da-dayyysss!!!

I’m itchin’ to share the final outcome, so let’s take a brief walk down moodboard + memory lane:

RESTORING 1930s CHARM

Where to begin?!! I love every nook and cranny of this dark green kitchen glamazon. What was already an expansive space feels enormous and is filled to the brink with brilliant texture, precious detail, mixed metals and, most importantly, charm.

My biggest goal for this renovation was to restore the kitchen back to a respectable state, whilst reflecting the period in which it was built. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to peel back the layers (oh boy, were there a lotta of layers) and this kitch sitch is thus forth revitalized!!! With a few modern and glammy amenities, of course.

When I started dreaming up my open kitchen design, it started out with the desire to pair green cabinetry with all the brass. Finding green cabinetry wasn’t an easy feat. After searching high and low for a cost-effective solution, I opted to design the space from scratch and paint them myself—Forest Green by Benjamin Moore. I sought shaker-style cabinets befitting the foundational character of a 1930s-era home. The design plan ensured ample storage from floor to ceiling; an open, flowing floor plan; and, most importantly, restoring the original red oak hardwood floors. How amazing are they?!!!

It was a major bonus being able to remove the old “partition” wall, and even more a delight when my contractor was able to restore the absent plaster ceiling swirlies. I’m so in love with the character of my “Van Gogh” ceiling, it’s ridiculous. I believe the house is, too. Additional kudos to my guys for finding a way to install flat, modern trim amongst the swarm of plaster protrusions!!

THE HARDWARE

What took these dark green cabinets to the next level? These precious globe knobs and trail pulls from Emtek, that’s what. In fact, if you scroll back to the moodboard, you’ll notice other knobs and pulls were at play. Due to a backorder issue, there was a swift change in the hardware. Let me tell you, I couldn’t be happier with the sudden change in direction. The rounded knobs and pulls fit into the design even better and called out real dang good to the hardware on my antique white gas range. Emtek’s hardware  is durable, hefty and sturdy; a beguiling addition I’m delighted I chose for my green kitchen glamazon.

One conundrum was where to put the paper towels! I’ve got the counter space, but who wants’m there? Nobahdy!! I fell head-over-heels for Pepe & Carols (P&C) brass paper towel holder. With a tip from a dear sweet friend, I installed the hardware underneath the sink for quick and easy (yet concealed) access—it’s the perfect place!

LET THE LIGHT SHINE IN

Let’s talk lighting. The Mitzi collection from Hudson Valley Lighting has got all the glitz and glam a girl could ever want. As soon as I discovered the Paige chandelier with her precious floral embellishments prettifying nine mega globes, I was smitten. Seriously, these big balls make a statement. That, plus two of’m paired together = supreme style machine.

Paige comes with an equally gorgeous selection of sconces, but this girl ain’t about that matchy-matchy, ya know. Puttering about, I stumbled across Little Miss Reese, the contemporary, Art Deco-inspired wall sconces of elegant dreams. What a unique design!! How can one not love that petite brass rim and teensy nub that follows? Who knew this brass edge would pair in so well with what came next: the backsplash.

PRETTY PENNIES

Initially, I was on the fence about a backsplash. My vision struggled with the scant backsplash look (i.e.; underneath the first row of shelving only) as well as the unfinished look and feel at a cabinet end or ceiling line. When visiting The Tile Shop (TTS), I did a happy home jig 💃 when I stumbled upon the glossy penny round mosaic tiles. Nothing felt like it tied in more with the character of this bungalow. These itty bitty pennies brought in a subtly glamorous, glossy grandeur to the space—a little razzle dazzle, if you will

Fact: installing tile from countertop to ceiling was the best choice I ever made.

When I discussed my thoughts on tile looking “unfinished” at the ceiling line, Renee, Tile Extraordinaire of TTS, made the most tremendous suggestion: gold profile tile trim. Whaaauuuutt?!! There was no going back. A rapid ease of all concerns, I incorporated this gold edge not only along the ceiling line, but as a clean, polished edge where the upper cabinets on the stove side cease. This minute detail amped up the Reese sconces something fierce, and yielded a sophistication beyond my expectations. She’s got a bit of a French feel, and I’m 100% OK with that.

LIGHTS ON, LIGHTS OFF

With a modern-day kitchen comes modern amenities. The switches, outlets and wall plates from the adorne collection by Legrand are the perfect accoutrement atop the penny round backsplash. Even for an older home, this modern accent fits in seamlessly and boasts big style. I mean, that gorgeous brushed brass patina though!! That’s what sold me, but the adorne’s options are endless. Beautiful to look at and marvellously easy to use. I very well may need to update the entire house.

Circling back to lighting, while on the hunt I came across Soraa’s lightbulb collection. It important to have gorgeous lighting to look at, but also physical light that makes the space shine. I’ve entertained a handful of times since this green kitchen glamazon’s inception and lemme tell you, the Radiant A-19 bulbs illuminate like no other. It sounds crazy, but these lights produce a crisp color that’s both calming and alluring. I literally told my yogi girlfriends how absolutely radiant they looked just hanging about, drinking some red wine. True to it’s name, ladies and gents. ☀️🍷🧘🏻‍♀️

LET’S GET COOKING

GUYS. Have you stopped, stared and drooled over this 36″ antique white gas range from Hallman yet? Well, if you haven’t, I certainly have. This stove is nothing short of striking, and she’s got quite the laundry list of meal prep a’coming. Those knobs, those handlebars, that stovetop with the brass burner detail … C’mon!!! #idie. This is the exact stove I yearned for and I’m losing my ever-lovin’ mind that it’s actually in my kitchen. 🤯 The range comes with an extensive list of impressive cooking options I’m gradually learning (I’ll be spending quite some time reviewing the handbook). I cannot freaking wait to share with you what this baby can do.

THE FINE DETAIL

Adorning the kitchen is an amalgam of artwork from the one and only Minted. There are so many inspiring pieces to choose from no matter your style or interest! I selected a blend of abstract, graphic and painterly artworks to compliment the space—each and every one special and distinct (and, of course, a few food-related, too!). What I love the most about Minted’s collection is the pieces are designed by independent artists. Having that infectious, entrepreneurial spirit via artwork in my home is a feeling I can’t even put into words.

PRO TIP: When you’ve got a wall of tile, use a sticky 3M hook. 👌🏻

For the Amor and Zuma Beach Prints, I selected the UV-Plexi Glass option to remove sun glare. Small change, big impact!

The bamboo bar stools make my heart swell with happiness. I thrifted them two years ago in preparation for this renovation. The Mona Zebra Chartreuse pillows from SWD Studio incorporate such a bold and beautiful hue on these splendid vintage bamboo bar chairs. The craftsmanship of SWD’s made-to-order pillow covers is meticulous and their linen is simply rich.

SWD Pillows // Bamboo Bar Stools (similar) // Zuma Beach Print // Woven Placemats (similar)

Can we please talk about this gorgeous brass commercial-style faucet for a minute?! Eye catching, solid and seemingly indestructible, you couldn’t beat the price tag with a stick ($260). I’m planning to cook hard AND clean hard in this kitch sitch. Plus, it’s not too bad on splatter when you’re rocking a 30″ sink. Bring on them dishes!!!

On the sink side, it was important to me to have symmetry along the 14-foot long expanse. This meant the cabinetry would protrude into the archway about five inches. Nevertheless, that luscious dark green and Bianco Calacatta quartz countertop edge is a welcome sight. Gimme those graphic veins all day long! To further the balance, I installed four floating shelves to display my hoarderculturalist side and all my collected “tchotch” acquired over time. Those sonovaguns were installed over these heavy duty floating shelf brackets and they ain’t going no-where.

This is Henry, a.k.a. Hanky, a.k.a Hankalish, a.k.a Hanklin … 🐶

In the depths of Home Depot’s website, I unearthed the perfect exterior French door, and to my pleasant surprise, with a custom paint option! After five years, all of my exteriors doors match; it’s quite the blissful feeling. I accented this spectacular find with the brawny and bronze Zeus Entry Set from Emtek. I treasure how effortlessly the hardware blends in with the french door. It’s allll right.

THE OUTDOOR SEATING AREA

Thankfully, the one downfall wasn’t in the kitchen at all. I got a little big for my britches anticipating time to paint the exterior during the springtime. The spring weather has been wholly uncooperative, making for rather poor painting conditions. Nevertheless, I must highlight the space I’m dying to complete. So glad I decided to update the outdoor lighting with these sleek Allenbury gooseneck sconce from Kichler. Once this bitty bungalow is painted (green, I think!), she’s really going to shine.

This green kitchen glamazon has turned out to everything I hoped it would be and more. I’m so incredibly grateful for this opportunity, and tremendously proud of my husband and I for accomplishing this major kitchen renovation together and 100% out of pocket. I truly enjoyed every step of the process—dust included—and as crazy as it sounds, I’d do it all over again exactly the same way.

Sweet fronds, thank you SO MUCH for following along and for your sweet, supportive and encouraging words throughout this entire process. Many thanks to Linda for inviting me to be a part of this wild ride, and enormous thanks to all of the sponsors who have helped support this budding blog and kitchen become what it aspires to be.

With love and gratitude,

Hi Kolleen! It’s approx 20x10ft. Head back to Week One for more deets!

        1. Also curious what was in the space/against the wall originally where the fridge was ultimately moved? Beautiful job! Really like the small seating area in the former fridge location.

          1. Jessica Brigham says:

Thanks, Melissa! It was a series of cabinets/countertop space in the old renovation. When we gutted, we found old plumbing pipes and it was likely the location of the original sink and butler’s pantry!

  2. Simply SPECTACULAR!!!!!
I know how hard you worked and it looks like it was worth every second of blood, sweat and tears.
    It’s outstandingly GORGEOUS!!!!

  3. Brooke Henderson says:

WE’RE NOT WORTHY! WE’RE NOT WORTHY! *bows down repeatedly*

  4. WOWZAS! Love the green…it’s sooo good. And the new countertops. And the stove…and the gold trim. WUT!

I’m amazed when anyone can get a kitchen or bath done in 6 weeks. You deserve a drink!

p.s. Your doggies are adorable. 🙂
p.p.s. Random: The plant on your bar cart…is it a sago palm? In case it is, just a heads up they are super toxic to pups. We have a bunch here in Palm Springs. Also, I just bought a calla lily for my ORC + then found out it’s also toxic to dogs + cats. Womp, womp.

  5. Okay girl, this is obviously beautiful, and I’d expect nothing less from you! But what really gets me in the best kind of way are all those fab details!! Extending the cabinets to make a peninsula, adding the gold trim at the edge of the backsplash, installing those sconce “sleeves,” the cabinet for the stool!!! I mean- it’s all so thoughtful- you killed it.

  6. I just can’t stop looking at these photos. I love those little wicker stools and that new little peninsula!! The lights are amaze-balls! It ties in so well with the rest of the house! So much love for this room.

Congrats on kicking arse in here!!

  7. Unbelievable!! Love that paper towel bar;)

  8. Home run! This kitchen is amazing and I can’t believe you painted those cabinets yourself! I love everything about this space….those vintage barstools are all that!

  9. This kitchen though! WOW! I absolutely love the colour palette, and all your finishes are top notch. Can we talk about that range though?! Holy smokes

  10. That’s a solid YES from me! Love what you did, and so impressed that you pulled it off all by yourselves! Must have been really hard work, but so worth it in the end! Now you get to bask in your glamazon kitchen every day! Curious what your budget was, and if you went over or stayed within it!

  11. omygosh well done. well well well well done. The result is simply stunning, and the process was a romp (admittedly, from a reader’s non-dusty, non-laborious point of view). Enjoy every fully earned moment in your glammy new cuisine.

  12. Jessica I seriously LOVE what you did in here and I think this is one of my favorite ORCs I have seen in a long time! Gorgeous details everywhere, most notably that amazing green you chose for the cabinets!! Enjoy all your hard work!!

  13. Jessica,
I love how the green cabinets and the green in the wallpaper in the dining room compliment each other; and how you’ll bring it outside too! And the way the cupboard knobs are similar to the stove knobs. Just gorgeous!!

    Cheers,
    Denise

  14. I love that this space went from “oh ya, I’ve seen that kitchen style a gazillion times before” to “Green Kitchen GLAMAZON” ha! Love how it turned out 🙂

  15. Whew! It’s a stunner and every inch was considered. Penny tile, the hardest tile to install, looks amazing …love the sconce extensions, just brilliant. Those cabinets, seriously….a new level of diy skills. It’s all so good, and yes the outside must be painted green. Great job!

  16. I bought the Hallman stove because of your kitchen. The antique white stove I received looks nothing like your antique white. Mine is gold exactly like it looks on Hallman’s web site. Nothing like your beautiful almost white stove!

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

That is so strange! I would highly recommend reaching out to the brand to resolve this color issue.

  17. The greens in the kitchen remodel are so beautiful. I love the wood refinishing in the kitchen and the open shelves. So cute.

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

      Thank you! 💓

  18. This looks amazing! I am 4 days into painting my cabinets and considering the green. Question for you, Dow was the color show everything (dust and dirt) like black carbonates would?

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Hi Lindsay! Not sure I understand the question … 🤔

  19. Thanks for sharing this precious information with us, this is really helpful for me

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

      Glad to hear it, Kimmy!

  20. Hey Jessica!! Love your site!! You’ve inspired me to paint my kitchen cabinets (when I say me, I mean a professional because I’m SCARED). Anyway, what finish did you use for the cabinet paint?

  21. Which is the Best Kitchen Countertop Material?

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

      Big fan of quartz!

  22. OMG. I love everything about this kitchen. Also love your commitment to green and showing it can definitely work to go all-in on a color throughout a home! Thanks for sharing your process!!! 💚

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Thank you so much, Chelsea! Appreciate your feedback 💚💚💚

  23. Wow, your kitchen is simply stunning!! I love the green cabinets- it looks so cozy and earthy. I’m getting my kitchen cabinets redone by a local cabinet refinisher in a few weeks, and I’m totally going to copy the look of your cabinets- and possibly all of your kitchen decor haha! I hope that’s alright!

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Aww, thanks Sarah!! Very flattering, please share on social—would love to see 👀

  24. Everything in this kitchen is beautiful and functional. Who makes the range hood please?

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Hi Kim—all sources are linked at the end of the post!

      1. Kim Burns says:

Oh I didn’t see the hood mentioned 😯

  25. This is mind blowing, thanks for sharing this precious information with us,

  26. It’s beautiful! Fantastic job! And those floors turned out fantastic! What stain did you use to refinish the red oak?

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Thank you!! My floor guy just used an oil-based polyurethane as I prefer the natural honey orange hue.

  27. Amanda Hathaway says:

I love, love, love this kitchen glam up! It looks SO good. The biggest thing your post helped me with was the hardware that doesn’t clash or distract from the Ilve range! Ours is on order and we just put new cabinets (I went with black!) and I cannot bring myself to install the hardware because I’m afraid the colors with clash. Did you choose unlacquered brass for the pulls?

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Thanks so much, Amanda—the hardware is satin brass! Enjoy your new kitch sitch 🙂

  28. Amanda Hathaway says:

Did you choose unlacquered brass for the pulls?

This kitchen is so much inspiration!
