WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • Measuring tape
  • X-acto blade
  • Level
  • Scissors
  • Ladder
  • A fabulous wallpaper

MEASURE YOUR WALLSPACE

Measure the width and height of the area you seek to apply peel and stick wallpaper. For old home dwellers like me, measure the height in a few places to account for any discrepancies from the house settling.

Make sure to account for 10% waste when placing your order. ‘Cause things happen and ya neva know.

BEST PRACTICES FOR PREPPING

Remove any hardware and existing removable wallpaper. If the wall is bare, give it a quick wipe down with a wet rag and dry.

PRO TIP: For freshly painted walls, wait at least 20 days until hanging peel and stick wallpaper.

THE FIRST PANEL IS EVERYTHING

Peel off the backing about 10 inches and lay the first panel at the highest point. This old plaster wall is shockingly even, so I chose the corner to overlap the adjoining wall, which is noticeably on a slant.

PRO TIP: The beautiful thing about peel and stick wallpaper is adjustments are a breeze. If the panel’s off, grab your level, peel up and lay back down until plumb.

Use your hands to smooth the panel from the center outward to remove any air bubbles. Press down firmly in joints for ease when cutting.

Word to the wise: if you get the first panel up perfectly, it’s smooth sailing from there. Take your time.

Once all the panels are up, make your corner joints cut and voila! Ju dun.

HANGING AROUND WINDOWS + DOORWAYS

When you arrive at a window or doorway, lay the panel as far as you can go and make an x-acto cut to the first joint right away. Cut away the excess with a scissor and this will make the panel much more manageable to lay flat.

IN CLOSING

Peel and stick wallpaper is a great way to gussy up the vibe of any space. Then, when you’re ready for a change, just g’ahead girl and take ‘er right down. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. 🍋

  2. Can you hang this wallpaper on lightly textured walls? Our texture is flat but it’s still slightly raised and most peel and stick papers say they only work on smooth sheet rock or on in textured surfaces?

Hi Emily! Most wallpaper purveyors do not recommend installation on textured wall surfaces. When you find a pattern you love, reach out to the company directly. They’ll likely ask for a photo of the wall to confirm if the surface will work or not. Good luck!!

  3. Awesome tutorial! I’m actually feeling confident that I can hang peel and stick wallpaper now! Where is that gorgeous coral peel and stick wallpaper from? I think it would be a perfect addition to my daughters room. Thank you!
