10 Non Toxic Houseplants That Won’t Kill Your Pretty Kitty

If you’re a green thumb gal like me, you’ve got more houseplants than you can count (which is a nice way of saying I currently have 59 😂). #plantproud

Gardening passions aside, I’m also a crazy cat lady in the making; a chick who’d be OK leaving her last day on Earth with a hundred cats in tow. When you combine the two, you’ve got to consider non-toxic houseplants that won’t kill your pretty kitty.

Not gonna lie, I’ve been fortunate in the realm of cat grazers, but a recent client’s four-legged cutie patootie thoroughly enjoys to snack in the homewild. Below is a list of ten common house plants that are not only decoratively lush, they’re proven to be 100% safe for Sylvester.

Thanks Mother Nature. You da bomb. 👊🏻

  1. What a great list! My cats will devour plants and it seems like practically everything is toxic, so I’ve avoided them. This is so helpful!

I am wondering if Ficus are poisonous to cats?

      Unfortunately, it is!

  3. Megan Pinto says:

    Jessica,

Thank you so much for the list of toxic plants. All three of my cats love to graze. I’m now bringing plants inside the home and feel more at ease thanks to you.

    Thank you again.

Hello Megan, I’m delighted to hear it 🐱 Happy overwintering! Xox Jessica

  4. Sorry to say this but spider plants ARE poisonous to cats. It may not kill them but it will make them extremely sick. I have cats and I had a cat eat one in the past. It made the cat have awful explosive diarrhea. I was so worried about her and I didn’t know what was wrong until the diarrhea and plant came out. Please beware of any house plants with your animals. The internet is not always correct. I’m not trying to be rude to the publisher of this article just speaking from experience with my own animals.

  5. Prayer plant. I love them, love their color, love the way they stand at night and lay down in the day time. So do my kittens….lol. I’m going to be planting a catnip bed outside and putting together an indoor herb pot with some kitty-pleasers (and enough rocks covering the dirt to keep them from using it as a litter box, which they graciously did to my avocado). Hopefully, giving them free range with a few plants to go crazy with will make them lessen their savaging of the struggling prayer plant.

Beth, your comment made my day! 😹 Such a great idea. Those furry bastards, we’ve always gotta work around ’em. Willing your prayer plant good growing vibes!!

    1. Jessica Brigham says:

Hi there! Aloe Vera is considered poisonous to cats, albeit Majesty Palm is A-OK. So sorry to hear about your poor kitty—–hope he/she is better now!
