THIS WEEK’S PROGRESS

True story: totally missed last week’s progress post. Why so? Frankly, I was in french door strippin’ hell. This wasn’t my first rodeo, but it was the first time I took on a door with 30 panes of glass to clean up. If this door wasn’t original to the home, I would’ve thrown in the towel in a heartbeat.

It took two weeks. Even though I considered it, I didn’t give up and DAMN does she look good. It was a learning curve; I made mistakes, invested the time and this is quite possibly my most rewarding rehab to-date.

My experience—what to do and what NOT to do—is documented on my Instagram story highlights here.

The single-panel closet door is ready and raring, too. Both doors are installed (because it’s freezing in this drafty ol’ house) and I find it much easier to apply poly this way. I’ll tape up the hardware and glass panes, then go to town applying one coat of the magic that is Minwax Polyshades (stain + poly combo).

Speaking of hardware, I revived and removed paint from my vintage hardware as well as patinated my unlacquered brass with three of my proven (and easy!) DIY techniques. Learn more about those processes in my stories highlights as well.

NERD ALERT: Did you know doors like these single-panel doors were known as Miracle Doors?! An Instagram friend turned me onto this fun, nerdy, old house lovin’ fact.

WHAT’S NEXT

Now that I’m over the door hump, a crescendo of catch-up is underway. I’ve built the shelves and wood supports for the alcove, painted the backdrop and am planning to install the shelves, wallpaper and light fixture within the next couple of days.

It’s pretty amazing what one coat of poly does to poplar. My DIY shelving tutorial is a work in progress in my story highlights (click here to watch!).

As for the shelving backdrop, I followed my gut instinct and opted for a solid. I’m still absolutely IN LOVE with the chartreuse I used in my second floor hallway—One Room Challenge, Desert Chic Guest Room + Hallway REVEAL!—that I needed a reason to see it everyday. I can’t wait to see what it looks like with the shelves up. Who knows, maybe another color will creep in there once all is said and done.

Lastly, I’m eagerly awaiting delivery of a gorgeous globe sconce from Pepe + Carols and my favorite classic switch plates from House of Antique Hardware. It’s the little things that’ll tie this mother together. Then it’s time to style, style, styyyyyle!

New here?! Catch up on Week One and Week Two!

Thanks for tuning in and keep killin’ it, fraaands!
